“I can tell when young people have only seen art online because they stand in front of these pieces and are in shock.” Allison Cruz, Executive Director of the Smithtown Township Arts Council, laughingly pointed out this jaw dropping reality to me as we toured the remarkable curation that is IMAGINATION 25 held at Mills Pond Gallery through November 9th.

Located in the quaint Long Island hamlet of Saint James, the Mills Pond Gallery is a halcyon vision. It’s a rambling Victorian mansion nestled amid sloping hills that support stately oaks and maple trees.  However, what lies within is a stark departure from what one would expect from picturesque Suffolk County; IMAGINATION 25 was illustrative and spectacular with lots of juicy eye-catching figurative work as well as thoughtful abstracts. Curated by NYC’s own David Reuss, I was very pleased my work was among them.

“The Glory Of The Unknown Space Monkeys and The Manner Of Their Awful Deaths” was a piece I created along the banks of the Pitt River in 2004. An examination on humanity and success, I cobbled the scant source material from libraries and what little was on the Internet at the time.

Happily, the modern Internet has a much more robust telling of these tender lives sacrificed in our care. Also happily, as a result of the sustained mood required to execute such a topic, I have since learned to redirect my creative output more optimistically.

If the glorious space monkeys want to touch a sacred place in your atmosphere, please explore them in my online print store.
